5 Amazing Nintendo Previews

Last week, I wrote a quick overview of Nintendo’s impressive new console, the Wii U. The gaming giant not only introduced the Wii U’s finalized design at the E3 Conference, but also gave a slew of previews for upcoming games! Hit the jump for my Top 5 favorite Nintendo previews from the E3 Conference.

5. New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS)

Mario Goes Gold

While the Wii U sequel to the highly praised game seems to be merely an extension of its predecessor, the Nintendo 3DS version innovates and creates (what looks to be) an entirely new Mario game! In this version, your goal is to collect as many gold coins as possible throughout the game, while completing various tasks and levels.

What I enjoy about this new concept is that it seems to somewhat borrow its technique from a gaming classic, Sonic the Hedgehog! Anybody who has ever played Sonic knows how important it is to constantly be collecting gold rings (and keeping them!), since the collection is directly linked to your health. While I’m not sure if this new game will mimick this aspect, we do know that Nintendo is making the gold coin collection the focal point.

I’m excited to see how innovative the gameplay actually gets! Looks like we’ll find out August 19, the official US launch date.

4. Avengers – Battle for Earth (Wii U)

As a huge Marvel fan, I was on the edge of my seat during this preview. While the trailer tells you nothing about how the game will utilize the new Wii U controller, there’s still a level of innovation at work here.

For example, the graphics look incredible! I can honestly say there’s no game in my entire Wii collection that really catches my eye for detail. This was just something we all accepted about the Wii…its purpose was not detail, its purpose was basically just fun. However, now that the Wii U has full HD output (and upgraded guts), it looks like that rule is now changing.

Another thing that really grabbed me in this trailer (shown below) was the scope of the story. We see many different Marvel characters unite to form the super-team in this game (hello Spider-Man, Wolverine, and numerous other X-Men staples) who currently do not have the legal rights to appear in an Avengers film. It will be exciting to see them face-off with the fantastic villains of Marvel (especially Venom). I’m also curious to see how much of the gameplay will be motion controls, as there will also be a version for Xbox 360 Kinect.

The game is set to come out for other consoles sometime this fall, and Wii U once the console releases.

3. Wii Fit U (Wii U)

When Wii Fit originally released, it was widely praised and provided us with the opportunity to play video games and be (somewhat) healthy at the same time. The great thing about the sequel for the new console is that the new GamePad allows for interesting new minigame concepts. One of these games that impressed me the most (and looked super fun) placed you as a waiter, serving cupcakes to tables.

Wii Fit UThe really cool thing about this game is that it adds another element to your Wii Fit experience. Whereas before, you would only use either the Wii Remote or the Balance Board, you now use two at a time. As you gingerly run on the Balance Board, you also hold the GamePad out in front of you, which serves as your tray. Your goal is to balance not only your body as you run towards your guests’ table on the TV screen, but also your tray, as your cupcake seems to be in danger of tipping over! The preview looks like a ton of fun, and I can’t wait to try the game in person! The release date is still TBA, but I’m speculating that most of these games will release along with the new console.

2. Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition

Yes! The award-winning game is finally coming to a Nintendo console, and with added gameplay techniques! The game takes advantage of the new Wii U GamePad by transforming it into Batman’s utility belt. Choose the gadget you need for your tasks and control them in innovative ways! Take a look at the video below to see a few of the new features.

What I really love about this new version of the game is that you finally have access to a full gadget arsenal. This makes gameplay much more fun and interactive, and the GamePad gives you control over your tools in 3D space (such as the Batarang and Bat Claw). As well, the game provides an ‘evidence scanner’ that lets you scan the room in virtual augmented reality, using your GamePad as the device itself.

1. ZombiU (Wii U)

ZombiU

This exclusive Wii U game is hands-down the most anticipated release for this console so far. From everyone I’ve talked to who’s played it already, they all say it was the funnest game at the entire E3 Conference. In this game, you’re stranded in a post-apocalyptic London setting where zombies are running rampant through the streets. Your goal is to survive at all costs!

The greatest part of this game is its incredible utilization of the new GamePad. With the controller, you can hack at things with an axe, strangle a zombie with your own hands, and pick off enemies from far away through an augmented virtual reality scope. In multiplayer mode, your opponent can control the zombies with a second GamePad screen as you fight them off with your own.

The detail in this game is astounding, graphically and conceptually. It seems that the game designers have really thought through every aspect of their game, down to the very pixels. From this early look, it’s clear that this stand-out game will definitely become a big hit.
